There's been some discussion on another site about what role technique plays in the production of guqin music, and it would be interesting to know what people here think.

To start things off, my view is that technique has the same role/purpose whatever the type of music.

technique is a must but is not the whole.
It likes money it is a must but is not the whole of life.

If you want to play traditional music created especially for guqin (or any other instrument) you MUST learn technique from a qualified teacher. To refine the technique requires practice. But if you want to make your own sounds on the qin then you don't need to learn technique. In this case, you won't technically be playing real guqin music, and not utilizing the instrument to its fullest and most beautiful. I feel it's very important to have a good foundation in technique. Then you can enjoy the instrument much more fully.
